Why a bone density scan, not a blood test, is the real answer
It's worth being direct about a common misconception: there is no routine blood test that reliably reveals a dietary calcium shortfall the way a ferritin test reveals iron status. Blood calcium is regulated too tightly for that. The actual diagnostic tool for assessing whether bone-level calcium has been depleted over time is a DEXA (bone density) scan — typically recommended for postmenopausal women, older adults with risk factors, or anyone with a relevant family history, rather than something ordered from a symptom alone.
